Children in middle school and junior high school feel the weight of academic pressure now more than ever before. Expectations from teachers and parents are high, which can lead to kids becoming mentally and emotionally frazzled. Parents can help them through this strenuous time in their lives.
At the office of Kiddies' Pal Pediatrics, we are experts at diagnosing your child’s issues as well as providing the treatment needed to maintain his or her excellent health. You’ll get as much time as you need to address your and your child’s every concern.
Here are some ways to help your child deal with academic pressure. These suggestions will help him (or her) keep his schoolwork in a balanced perspective.
Take the focus off of his grades. If some or all of them are less than stellar, he might think that those marks are the highest he’ll ever achieve. Ask him about his favorite subjects, which classes he’s not enthusiastic about, his teachers, extracurricular activities and social groups. Participating in school clubs and sports teams is a great way for him to make friends and divert his attention from schoolwork.
Don’t “overschedule” him. The constant rush from one activity to another can lead to stress, anxiety and burnout. Overscheduling can have an intense impact on his mental health and overall well-being. He needs time to relax and recharge. Steer him away from his electronic devices; encourage him to go outside and mingle with nature.
Eat dinner with him as often as possible. It’s a wonderful opportunity to shoot the breeze and for you to pick up on anything that’s troubling him about his workload of school assignments. Family dinners are also good reminders that his parents and siblings support him.
Pay attention to cues that could indicate he’s under academic pressure. Watch out for significant changes in his moods or behaviors. Kids can be temperamental for sure, but big shifts might be a sign of more serious problems. Becoming depressed, anxious and withdrawn are common signs.
Most importantly, make sure he knows that he can always go to you with his problems and that you’ll help him in any way you can.
