Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, often referred to as ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental disorder commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents. Over seven million children 3-17 years of age in the United States alone have been diagnosed with ADHD.
Overall, the prevalence of ADHD among children in the U.S. is approximately 11.4%.[1]
Children with the disorder typically experience difficulty focusing on tasks or sustaining attention, an inability to control their behavior, and exhibit impulsiveness or hyperactivity— often impacting their functioning at school and in social interactions. In adults, ADHD may also affect their job performance.
While some individuals affected by ADHD struggle with a single problem, such as inattentiveness, others might find themselves challenged by hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. Most diagnosed with ADHD will manifest a combination of symptoms.
Although researchers have identified genetic and neurobiological factors that contribute to ADHD, the exact causes in individual cases often remain unclear. Furthermore, individuals with ADHD frequently experience co-occurring conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, learning disabilities, conduct disorders, and substance use disorders. These comorbidities can complicate diagnosis and treatment, making comprehensive assessment and individualized care essential.
Diagnosis of ADHD is based on a pattern of symptoms and requires a comprehensive evaluation to rule out other medical or psychiatric conditions. While symptoms for some may lessen with age, the issues associated with ADHD often persist into adulthood. Treatment for the disorder can involve behavioral interventions, coping strategies, and medications.
Evaluations & Care
At Kiddies' Pal Pediatrics, we conduct comprehensive ADHD evaluations that include detailed medical history, behavioral assessments, and feedback from parents and teachers. This thorough approach helps us accurately diagnose ADHD and distinguish it from other conditions with similar symptoms.
After diagnosis, Dr. Minuskin works closely with families to develop personalized management plans, which may include behavioral strategies, school accommodations, and medication options when appropriate. We provide ongoing support to monitor progress and adjust treatment, helping your child succeed at home, school, and beyond.
